"Siciliae Regnum cum adjacente Insula Sardinia et maxima parte Regni Neapolitani accuratissima delineat"

Copper etching by Matthaeus Seutter. Augsburg, ca. 1740 Original hand coloring. Especially the title cartouche is a very decorative baroque masterpiece.

This map had been terribly maltreated. Parts were missing. Very narrow margins. Map has been heavily restored. The restauration, however, has been quite successful. Paper has been expertly filled in where missing. It was mounted on paper, thus giving the map a passible impression. The work that has been done can best be seen by holding the map against daylight. Even after restauration this map remains in less than good condition.

Map shows Sicily, the Liparian islands, the Agadean Islands, Malta and Gozo, Sardinia, the south tip of Corsica, Calabria. The coast line of Tunesia. Two insets show: a bird's eye view of Catania and the smoking vulcano Aetna. The other inset shows: areal view of Messina with its harbor.

No title. Map of Sicily and Calabria. Anonymous lithograph.

We had doubts about taking this map to be offered on our webpage, because we know almost nothing about it, and the map had been folded horizontally and vertically many times. Looking at it close-up, we decided that it belongs here nevertheless, because it is very detailed and, despite all its faults, very attractive. Someone pencil-marked it as being from 1835, a replicable assumption.

There is a little margin in the north of Calabria indicating that the map was not cut off from the rest of Italy. Sicily, Calabria is shown in nice detail south from the Gulf of Policastro, Rotonda and Amendolara. Sicily shows itself very detailed as well as the Aeolian Islands.

As mentioned above, this map has many folds (to fit a miniature book???). Some insignificant tears and little holes have been repaired by underlaying paper. Generally a desireable map in spite of its drawbacks.
