After having been, for centuries, a Vice-Kingdom of Spain, the island of Sardinia came i
nto the possession of the Duke of Savoy in 1720, who assumed the higher ranking title
of ãKing". Center of this kingdom was Turin in Peimont. Out of this resulted,
in 1861, the Kingdom of Italy.

The yellow part of this map shows the duchy of Ferrara. To the south are Bologna and Ravenna and the
surrounding areas. To the East is the Adriatic Sea. The central waterway is the Po river and its many tributaries.
North of the Po is part of the course of the Adige river. Part of the charm of this map is that so much detail is
given to the rivers which branch out like a cobweb on the map. The title cartouche is flanked by angels bearing
wine and fruit.

Condition: Very Good. Vertical centerfold has been flattened.

"Territorio di Orvieto". Copper etching in attractive hand coloring from the "Atlas of Italy" by Giovanni Antonio
Magini (1555-1617). Bologna, 1598.

One of the very enticing maps of this important Italian cartographer of the 16th century. We have to realize that
we are looking at a very well preserved map 400 years of age! It shows, in an almost square format, the Lago
di Bolsena and the famous region of Orvieto, the region i.e. home to one of Italy's excellent wines.
A Renaissance title cartouche, another with dedication and signature and another one yet with a mileage scale
plus an ornamentic way of depicting mountains, forests and cities give this desirable map the touch of antiquity
map lovers cherish so much.

This map has general light toning and ink rests on the plate mark that came about when the copper plate was
pressed on the paper. Small repairs on margin edges. Reverse side is very spotted.
Repair in lower margin on the vertical centerfold. Minor creasing.

This very decorative map of Ischia is northwest-oriented. Notice the interesting topographical details. Historical sailing vessels sail in the Canale di Procida. The promontory at the bottom of the map is Cuma. The town of Ischia is shown on a promontory on the left of the island. Verso: Text in German.

"Magnae Graeciae Descriptio"

Historic map showing Southern tally, where antique Greeks began to settle in the 8th century BC. They Greeks brought along with them the Hellenic civilization, which was consequently picked up and further developed by the Romans and which is one of the very important cradles of Western Culture and Civilazation. Of Sicily we see only the northern coastline. The only city shown is Messina. Well defined are the Aeolian Islands (Liparische Inseln). On right side: Coastline of Albania and part of Greece. Bunches of coins and medals are held by angels in the Thyrenian and in the Ionian Sea.

"Quadrilatere Strategique"

"Plan topographique de la bataille de Solferino - Details de quatre places fortes."

Paris, ca. 1870

On June 24, 1859 the battle of "Solferino and San Martino" took place. Opponents were the allied French Army under Napoleon III and the Sardinian Army under Victor Emmanuel II. (The Franco-Sardinian Alliance) against the Austrian Army under Franz Joseph I. The battle resulted in the victory of the Allied Forces. A total of ca. 270000 soldiers were involved in the battle. And the uncounted wounded soldiers on the battlefield convinced the Swiss Jean-Henri Dunant to organize the Geneva Convention and the establish the Red Cross.

The battle led also to the final success of the Italian Risorgimento, the unification of the national state of Italy as a constitutional monarchy instituted in 1861 and finalized with the inclusion of Latium (State of the Church) by military intervention.

This map shows four cities in bird's eye views: Verona, Mantua, Peschiera del Garda and Legnago.

West- oriented map of the Province of Padua in Italy. reaching from Vicenza to Venice and the Adriatic Coast between the rivers Zero (fiume Zero) and Adige (Etsch), or if you will between the Island of Mazzorbo and Choggia. Right through the center of map we see the Brenta river, along which wealthy Venetians built their Palladio villas. On the map also the town of Este, origin of one of the oldest and most noble families in Italy and in Europe.

Laid down on China paper to prevent existing tears in upper margin from extending further into map. Margins a bit soiled. Reverse side has explanatory text print in Latin.

This attractive map shows the Kingdom of Naples in fine detail. The map extends as far north as Ascoli Piceno.
On the right is part of Albania which was then part of the Turkish Empire. The island of Corfu is above the mileage chart.

Map has a vertical centerfold. Lower margin has been reeinforced. Map has some scattered creasing.
Crease in upper left corner margin. Some spotting in margins and minor repairs.

Kingdom of Naples - Apulia

Münster. Basel, ca 1550.

This entry includes 4 pages with illustration and text on both sides describing the Kingdom of Naples. The most
important illustration is the map shown that begins with Gaeta in the northwest and shows the "boot" of Italy. On
the right side is the Adriactic Sea. In the lower left are the islands of Vulcano, Salina, Lipari, Filicudi and a small
part of Sicily. The text is Latin. Other illustrations include a coat of arms, a sword, Queen Iohanna (???) and various noblemen. The text gives some general history of Naples as well as specific information about the reign of Conradus
and the reign of the Aragonese.

The condition of all four pages is Excellent except for some inking out of 4 lines on one page and a handwritten
note in a margin, all in brown ink and very old. The map shown above is in excellent condion and very clean.

Historic and very detailed map of the Gulf of Pozzuoli and of the Gulf of Baia. It includes even Cuma. Map shows all important sites along the shown coast line, which was, in Roman times, a very important area with warm springs and classical villas of wealthy citizens. Plinius the younger observed from Pozzuoli the eruption of Vesuvius in the year 79, which devastated Herculaneum and Pompei. Title cartouche is ordained with depicted Roman coins and medals.

East-oriented map shows various postal and other routes along the Calabrian coast between Napoli and Reggio (strait of Messina). Quite detailed. In the east included are: Foggia, Ordona, Melfi, Potenza, Corigliano. Map also includes Stromboli and Basiluzzo of the Lipari islands. Mileage meters in Italian, French and German miles at bottom.

Clean print showing traces of use. Margins a bit frayed. Several vertical folds to fit book size.

In the lower right corner is the Sorgipiano Valley and the towns of Tortorella and Torraca. In the upper right is a detailed inset showing Policastro and surrounding area. On the left side is a detail of Sorrento, Anacapri and surrounding area.

The map has a small repaired tear in the upper left corner. Condition is other wise Almost Very Good.

On the left side is a diagram showing the distances of various towns between Munich and Mantua. On the right side is a diagram showing the distances of many towns between Glocknitz and Trieste. Also shown on the map are railroad lines.

Pavia is located almost in the center of this map, slightly north of the Po river "flowing" from the left side to the right side of the map. The large city in the upper centeral part of the map is Milan. In the west are Vercellin and Casale Monferrato. In the east is the Adda river fllowing into the Po. To the left of the decorative title cartouche is the Trebbia river.

Except for some miniscule scattered spotting and very light browning along centerfold, the overall condition is Very Good.

At the top of the map are detailed town plans of Samminiato on the left, Modigliana in the center and Volterra on the right. The town plans at the bottom are Pistoia in the lower left, Prato in the center and Pescia in the lower right.
