Citation from Wikimedia Commons: Franz Anton Schraembl (1751-1803) was a Vienna based cartographer working in the later part of the 18th century. Schraembl was partnered with Joseph von Reilly. His great work, the Allgemeiner Grosser Atlas was started in 1786. This ambitious atlas was to be based upon only the most up-to-date cartographic information available. Schraembl pulled his maps from the work of explorers such as Cook, Roberts, and others. The atlas was finally finished in 1800 but, possibly restricted by its high production cost, enjoyed only relatively minimal circulation.

"Africa nova descriptio Auc. Guiljelmo  Blaeuw"

Delicately hand-colored copper etching

By Willem Blaeu (1571-1638)

Published by Johan Blaeu

Amsterdam, 1647

Highly decorative map of Africa.

Beautiful border decoration.Top from left to right city views in the shape of medallons: Tanger, Ceuta, Algiers, Tunis, Alexandria,

Alcair (Kairo), Mozambique, S.Georgius de la MIna (Elmina, Ghana, formerly Gold Coast), Canaria.

Left side: Five pairs of Natives of Africa. Right side: Five pairs of Natives of Africa.

The African continent enriched with depiction of wild animals of Africa. The Atlantic and the Indian Ocean richly decorated with sail ships and sea monsters. The baroque title cartouche placed on the Arabian Peninsula. The Red Sea bearing the following titles: Mare Rubrum, Mare de Mecca olim Sinus Arabicus.

While the African continent is clearly recognized by its unique shape, the interior is in parts still the unknown continent that Africa was to Europeans well into the 19th century.

History of  map: Willem Blaeu designed and printed a large wall map of Africa in 1608. The map here described is basically the map of 1608 in a reduced scale. It was published in Johann Blaeu's world atlas in Amsterdam, 1647.

Publisher Willem Blaeu. Published in Amsterdam

Condition: Along both sides of centerfold restorations have been professionally executed. There were water stains along centerfold and in lower margin. But they were very well mitigated and alleviated, so that they are not disturbing (only seen against a source of light and not from the front). Slightly age-toned. Wide margins
The black line on the lower left edge does not exist on the map.

ã"Africa / Libya / Vorland / mit allen künigreichen so zu unsern zeiten darin gefunden werden"

Woodcut. Published in "Cosmographia" by Sebastian Muenster (1488-1552) German edition.

Basel, 1553

A fascinating early map of Africa, the charm of which is the geographical fumbling for facts. This map belongs to the treasure maps of the African continent. It was first published in 1544. Africas already has its characteristic shape, which is, however, still far from realistic. That, among many other things, creates the charm of this Renaissance map.

There is centuries old ink hand writing in the left bottom margin corner by a former owner. The bottom margin has water stain clear across reaching to the keel of the ship and the Cape of Good Hope. Map as pleasant age toning. Aside from the mentioned specifics this map is in very good condition. Vertical centerfold.

By Francesco Costatino Marmocchi (1805-1858)

Florence, 1842

Marmocchi's atlas (in Italian language) is still a very classical publication. It has the advantage of showing facts about the African interior which were only recently discovered and unknown in Europe before.

The atlas has a quart format, which means, that the the large sized maps had to be folded vertically and horizontally several times to fit into the atlas.

The map shows very little trace of use or handling. It is clean, and the colors are bright and pleasant. There is a small abrasion in the lower left corner in the Atlantic Ocean of no importance. Map includes the Arabian Peninsula and the southern tips of Europe.

"Totius Africae Nova Repraesentatio qua praeter diversos in ea Status et Regiones, etiam Origo Nili es veris  RRPP Missionariorum  Relationibus ostenditur"

Copper etching with very fine original hand coloring.

Published by Johann Baptist Homann (1664-1724)

Nuremberg, engraved 1707, published 1715

The African continent was, in 1723, in wide parts still "terra incognita" to Europeans. The outside contures of this large continent were quite well documented, so that the shape was depicted correctly. But the interior was widely unknown. The political realities have changed over and over. since this map was printed, so that the attractive hand coloring we enjoy seeing here is more or less a colorful decorative asset.

The baroque cartouche shows native Africans and some native animals. The Arabian Peninsula is almost entirely shown, as is the southern part of Europe as it reaches into the Mediterranean Sea.

Map shows some minor traces of age and use. There is a bit thumb soiling from turning pages, when the map was still in an atlas. Margins also show some age toning. But the map is generally in very good condition. There is no print on the reverse side

Map has little to do with the modern "Islamic Republic of Mauretania". It actually shows only the very northern part of this state. The title refers to ancient historic understanding of the "Maghreb" It really shows, by modern geography, Morocco, Algeria, Tunesia and the westernmost part of Libya. In outlines we see southern and eastern Spain up to the Balearics. Interesting in the extreme west off the Atlantic coast the map shows "Erythia" (Erytheia) one suspected island of the Canary Island group. Erytheia was the island where, according to Greek mythology, Hercules had the task to fetch the Golden Apples, which were supposed to be held hidden in the Hesperides' garden in the most western part of the then known world. Erytheia was one of the Hesperides.

The "Roman Histories" by Polybius were among the most important writings about Hellenistic history and the upcoming importance of the Roman Empire. Xylander, an all-round intellectual scholar, translated the book from the original Greek rather than reproducing the existing Latin translation. The entire work comprised originally 40 volumes, of which most are lost. The ones preserved contain maps of the Mediteranian countries: Greece, Macedonia, Turkey, Syria, Egypt, Mauretania, Italy and a few others. Polybius used the maps of Ptolomy.
